No Bark Dog Collars: Are They Harmful Or Harmless?
There are currently three types of no bark collars commonly used on dogs.
They all give good results, but you might be wondering if using them is ethical.
As a dog owner, you should know about the no bark dog collar you want to use on
your noisy pet.
Spray Collars
Some no bark dog collars work by emitting a spray of citrus smell if the dog
barks for a while. Dogs don't like this smell, so they will stop barking in
order to avoid it. These collars usually give a hissing sound before releasing
the citrus smell, giving the dog a chance to stop the barking and saving itself
from the spray. Professional dog trainers and veterinarians consider the use of
these collars ethical, since the dog feels no pain and can even avoid the
discomfort.
Ultrasonic/Sonic Dog Collars
Ultrasonic or sonic dog collars will emit a high pitched tone if the dog barks.
The sound is similar to the one of a dog's whistle. Humans can't hear this
sound, but dogs can, and they soon learn to stop barking so that the sound goes
away. Dog trainers and veterinarians see no problem with these collars, as they
aren't harmful. Once again, there is no pain involved its just a bit annoying
for the dog. To get better results, don't use this collar for long periods of
time, as dogs can get used to the sound and just ignore it.
Electronic No Bark Collars
These collars work by delivering a small electrical shock to the dog's neck
whenever it starts barking. The shock is not harmful or painful, imagine the
static shock you get when you handle fabrics. Due to its name, people think that
this type of collar is cruel and unethical and shouldn't be used on animals. The
main reason why these people consider this collar unethical is that it actually
causes a physical stimulus that can be felt by the dog. And well, some people
think that's not ok. However, these collars are very effective for reducing
excessive barking, so take them at least into consideration.
There are three types of no bark collars that you can use to train your dog:
citrus spray collars, sonic or ultrasonic collars, and electrical shock collars.
Citronella spray and sonic or ultrasonic sounds are considered ethical, but
electronic shock collars are sometimes considered unethical because of the
shocking. However, none of these methods are harmful or dangerous.
no bark collars are a great way to reduce excessive barking that isn't related to your dog's health. Although most people don't have a problem with them, some of them think shock collars are unethical. Nevertheless, all no bark dog collars are perfectly safe.
