Whenever
you buy a purebred dog, choosing a quality breeder is the key to getting a healthy
dog that matches what you expect from the breed. Choosing Jack Russell breeders
is no different! But finding a quality Jack Russell breeder is not always easy,
because so many people are breeding poor quality dogs just for fun, trying to
make a little extra money.
Temperament Is Key
Because the Jack Russell
is a dog with a strong, lively temperament, finding a Jack Russell breeder that
focuses on breeding dogs with a pleasing temperament is important. There are two
ways to discover this. First, talk to the Jack Russell breeder you are considering,
and find out what they focus on when breeding their dogs. Do not ask specifically
about temperament, and see if they bring it up.
Another way to test the
temperament of the dogs from a particular Jack Russell breeder is to spend some
time with the adult dogs on the premises. Do not listen to any reason why the
dogs may not have a good temperament. Much of the temperament of a dog is bred
within them, so if the parents of your new puppy do not have a good temperament,
then chances are yours will not either.
Look At The Conditions
Look
at the conditions in which the Jack Russell breeder keeps his or her dogs. You
want to have puppies that have been handled from birth on. These dogs will make
better pets or show dogs, no matter which is your intended use. Breeders who keep
their dogs in their home are great at making sure that their dogs are used to
people. A Jack Russell breeder who keeps his dogs in the yard or barn in cages
is not a good option.
Ask For A Well Puppy Exam
If you are leaning
towards a particular breeder for your purchase, talk to the breeder and find out
if they will allow you to take the puppy to your vet for a well puppy exam. This
eliminates any unexpected health problems or congenital defects that you did not
discover when looking the puppy over. Jack Russell breeders who produce quality
dogs will allow you to have the vet check over the dogs. Breeders who have something
to hide might not. If they deny you this check up, then choose a different breeder!
Look
At The Breeder’s History
If you are looking for more than just a new pet,
then take a careful look at the breeder’s history. Do they have any prize winning
dogs in their kennel? How long have they been breeding Jack Russells? What has
their track record been as far as puppy health? These types of questions will
help direct you towards a quality breeder with the best Jack
Russell puppies in your area.
