How Far Can a Jack Russell Run?

I have an almost-three-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, and I like taking her on runs with me. Recently, though, I've been starting to train for a half marathon (13.2 mile) race, so I've been upping my running mileage to about 6 to 8 miles per run, and I'll probably keep increasing it up to 10 to 12 miles in a few months. So far, she hasn't had any problems running the 6-8 miles (in fact, she wants to run more), but I'm concerned that she's running too much and she just doesn't know what's good or bad for her. Anyone have any ideas on how far is too far? Thanks.

My jack russel is about the same age as yours. Since jack russels seem to have endless amounts of energy we got him a doggy treadmill. He begs to go on it. He runs about 10 miles daily. So your dog should be fine. Make sure shes eating and drinking enough though when you run. Some dogs will keep running and not want to stop. Good luck with your marathon!

Like any athlete you need to increase her exercise gradually. If she is anything like my terriers used to be they can run all day. After all originally they were bred to follow the hounds so they have to have stamina. She is neither too young where there may be a danger in her damaging her bones nor too old for wear and tear problems to her joints. I reckon she's one very lucky dog. She must sleep all night lol!

Just think how many extra steps your little dog with short legs is taking then you. You have to be careful because they can seriously injure themselves when running long distances. Smaller dogs have little hearts. I would not take her more then what you are doing now. If you need a running partner, join a running club.

Hi I'm a Certified Professional Dog Trainer,
Dogs are Pack animals and packs are consantly on the move they will travel several miles a day in the wild and Jack Russells are very high energy dogs so this is good for her it will physically stimulate her and that is something that all to often domestic dogs miss out on thats why so many dog owners have problem dogs is because they are not stimulated enough mentaly or physically you need to keep in mind your dogs physical health state also but I think it sounds like you are doing that so you should have a great running partner.
