Why Do My Jack Russells Scratch Me on the Head When They Want Something?

I usually am very attentive to their wants and needs. However, if they think an unwelcome critter is outside, they will run to me and scratch me on the top or back of the head. Is this typical behavior of Jacks, or do all dogs do this?

My dog is not a Jack Russell and he does this. If he wants my attention, especially in the morning, he will paw my head. He also does this when I'm sitting on the couch. He will walk up and just give me a few pats on the leg or the head. They can't communicate with words, so I think that's their little way of telling us they need/ want something, even if it's just some more attention.

Jack Russells are a hyper dog but very smart, that's how they communicate with you.
