Protect Other Pets
If you have other pets in your home, such as hamsters or caged birds, you need to be aware that Jack Russell puppies are born hunters. Just because you bring the Jack Russell into your home as a puppy does not mean that his natural hunting instinct will not apply to your existing pets. Place your pets’ cages in a safe place in your home, out of reach of your Jack Russell puppy. You may even want to consider putting your small pets in a room that will be off limits to the puppy.
Lots And Lots Of Toys
Your Jack Russell puppy is going to need plenty of things to chew on! If you do not give your new pet safe chew toys, he will find some of his own, and you may not like the choice! Make sure to stock up on safe chew toys and doggy ropes before you bring your new dog home.
Puppy Proof Your Home
Jack Russell puppies will get into anything and everything that is on their level, and keep in mind that their level might include anything reachable from the couch or a chair. They are notorious for their intense curiosity, so you need to puppy proof your home. Remove anything that will be within reach of the puppy and place it out of reach. Remember that your puppy will chew on anything they can find, and you do not want him to get a hold of something dangerous. Also, remove any plants that are poisonous to animals, because your dog will certainly get into the plants.
Prepare Your Yard
Your Jack Russell pup is going to spend many fun hours outdoors exploring your yard. Make sure your yard is a safe haven for him. You absolutely must have a fence! Jack Russells are hunting dogs, inside and out, and they will chase after small animals, even if their quarry leads them into the busy street. Also, keep in mind that Jack Russells have been known to climb trees, so make sure that there are no trees that will allow them to climb out of the yard. Also, chain link fences might not hold a Jack Russell, because he will likely climb right over! And remover your prize begonias! He will not want to leave them alone!
